Planning and executing one of the largest multi-sport events in the world is no easy feat, and the 2007 Canada Winter Games is committed to the athlete-centered fashion that has become tradition and a source of pride for the Canada Games Movement.
The Canada Games Council is the franchise holder for the Canada Games Movement. The Council was incorporated in 1991 as a private, independent, non-profit organization responsible for the ongoing management of the Canada Games and the development of the Canada Games Movement. The Council works with Host Societies to ensure that the standards and the integrity of all aspects of the Canada Games are upheld.
The 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse will be the first time the Games have been held north of 60. The more than 3,500 athletes, coaches, managers and officials from the 10 provinces and three territories who will participate in the Games will reap the rewards of the Host Society’s remarkable efforts. The 2007 Canada Games will mark a coming of age for the north, a cultural opportunity of a lifetime for the competing athletes, and a full circle realization as the pan-northern treatment of these Games allows us to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Canada Games by finally touching every Province and Territory.
The building excitement and uniqueness of the 2007 Canada Games means added promotion and exposure for the Canada Games Movement. In addition to ensuring the Canada Games continue to secure a key role in the development of next generation national and international champions, the Canada Games Council has broadened its focus from Games only, to Games and between Games initiatives called Dreams and Champions programs. The Dreams and Champions programs are about ‘inspiring dreams’ in Canada’s youth to participate in sport and physical activity, while also ‘building champions’ by providing the resources, tools and activities to help young athletes achieve success.
The Canada Games Council wishes to thank the municipal, provincial/territorial and federal levels of government, the 2007 Host Society, and the corporate sector for their important contributions to sport development and to the Canada Games Movement. We also strive to recognize the thousands of volunteers across the country who give unselfishly to the Games
