In February 2005, Northwestel announced its commitment as a Major Sponsor of the Whitehorse 2007 Canada Winter Games, becoming the first northern corporate partner to support the Games. Northwestel is recognised as a key contributor to the well-being of northern communities through its community investment program and the volunteer contributions of its employees.

Northwestel’s support has been vital to the planning phase of the Games operations. Northwestel is providing essential telecommunications services including local service and equipment, video and teleconferencing services, and Internet and web hosting services to facilitate the day-to-day operations of the Host Society. . Total contributions of Northwestel, encompassing cash and in-kind gifts, are estimated at over $360 000.

In a press release published February 24, 2005, Northwestel President and CEO Paul Flaherty explained why the company has chosen to support the Games: “Northwestel has a long history of supporting the North's own Arctic Winter Games since their inception in 1974 and this commitment is being carried forward to supporting the Canada Winter Games. We are proud to partner with the Whitehorse 2007 Host Society in bringing this major national event to the North for the first time ever. Our employees here in the Yukon and across the North are also excited about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in hosting one of Canada’s pre-eminent sporting and cultural events”.
