The Canada Winter Games opens its 40th year in true Yukon fashion
2007, February 24th:
About 5,000 people celebrated the Opening in the huge white tent, ATCO Place.
The roar of the crowd was heard across Whitehorse — and across Canada on a live CBC broadcast.

The traditional protocols were adhered to: Kwanlin Dun Chief Michael Smith and Chief Ruth Massie of Ta'an Kwachin welcomed guests to their traditional Territory. Linda Harvey sang a Southern Tutchone song.

The entertainment continued with Leaping Feats Creatice Danceworks performing behind NWT rapper, Godson.

The Ashley brothers performed hip-hop with fiddle to start welcoming in the athletes who streamed in waving their home flags.

The Opening Ceremony had a distinctly Pan North approach. Nunavut throat singers and a drummer took centre stage. To the left, Dene drummers played a stick gambling song while two teams faced off. On the right stage, was a demonstration of the two foot high kick. A blanket toss drew gasps as men were flung into the air.

Les Ceussent qui ont du fun quant y chantent gave an à capella performance with a mix of French Canadian songs.

The torches from each territory were brought in along with youth athletes, via an all terrain vehicle, dog team and skidoo. A slideshow of the Torch Relay was in the backdrop. These young athletes were joined by young Ava Milner, granddaughter of Peter Milner, the man whose dream it was to host the Games in the North.
