99 Days and Counting!
2006, November 16th:

With 99 days before the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, Canada’s three northern premiers joined together to begin the official countdown to the Games.

The premiers made the declaration from their own territorial legislatures – Premier Paul Okalik in Iqaluit, Nunavut; Premier Joe Handley in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories; and Premier Dennis Fentie in Whitehorse, Yukon – and were linked to each other via video conference. Canadian hockey sensation and broadcaster, Kelly Hrudey, hosted the Pan North event from Whitehorse.

“You can feel the excitement for the Games growing across the Yukon,” said Premier Dennis Fentie. “The energy that is building for this event is inspiring. All three territories are gearing up to host this major national event.”

In addition to Kelly Hrudey, a Hockey Night in Canada analyst and former NHL ice hockey goaltender, the premiers were joined by local athletes and performers from their territory.

“At times it seems as though the Opening Ceremony is only a few moments away,” said Piers McDonald, President of the 2007 Canada Winter Games. “So many people have been working very hard for several years to make these Games a great success. I’m sure these final 99 days before the Games will pass quickly.”
