Now that the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse have ended and been proclaimed a rousing success, Canada’s amateur athletes will shift their focus to the next summer Games being held in Prince Edward Island in 2009.
The 2009 Canada Summer Games will see events take place in Charlottetown for the first week of the Games. The action will then shift across the island to Summerside for week 2.
This will be second time that PEI has hosted the Canada Games. The 1991 Canada Winter Games took place in Charlottetown.
Staffing has already begun for the national event and the bid committee has started to evolve into a Host Society complete with dedicated planning volunteers.
The PEI Games will be the 22nd edition of the Canada Games which were first held in Quebec City in 1967. The next Canada Winter Games will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2011.
