Biathletes Excel in the Elements
2007, March 1st:
Biathlon competitors at these Games wear white medical tape across their faces to cut the wind chill. Today they sported cat whiskers, racing stripes and good luck slogans as they braved a Yukon cold snap.

Twenty kilometer per hour gusts blasted across the shooting range. Rifles bobbed, threatened cross lane shots, and athletes struggled to maintain muzzle control. Both prone and standing, though, several shooters achieved clean shots or near perfects.

At the end of the day, the trio of Alberta’s Tyson Smith, Yannick Letailleur, and Quebec’s Maxime Leboeuf mounted the podium for medals in the 15 kilometer men’s Individuals. Smith’s 20 second lead over Leboeuf earned him gold, and Letailleur took bronze.

For the second day in a row, Rosanna Crawford (Team Alberta), garnered gold in the women’s 12.5 km Individual over Quebec silver medalist Claude Godbout and bronze winner Megan Imrie from Team Manitoba. Crawford, sister to Chandra Crawford of the 2007 cross-country ski Team Canada, led by 50 seconds overall.
